My Weekly Book Haul: 12/07/2014

STSmall

Friday Finds is something that was started over on ShouldBeReading and Stacking the Shelves over at TyngaReviews, I am in love with all of these as I love finding other blogs to follow and books to read through these! So check them all out and see what you find, Stacking the Shelves has a lot of participants as well which is great. This is basically a way for me to show what books I have received, borrowed or bought each week. All book covers and their summary come from back of book or Goodreads.

This week has just been okay, I didn't get up to too much and I still struggled with my reading slump. I wrote my post on how to conquer reading slumps and the blogosphere outdid itself! I was so pleased with all the different advice I got. Will be trying a few new things next week and can't wait to see if it works.
Still struggling with the slump but I did try Throne of Glass and ended up becoming absolutely obsessed with it! I LOVED IT! I am Chaol all the way though, Dorian needs to get out the way!

All I can concentrate on at the moment (it's currently Friday) is the fact that I am going to London Film and Comic Con tomorrow. I will be attending YALC, our first Young Adult literary convention and I can't wait. There's going to be amazing talks, panels and so many amazing authors doing signings. CAN'T WAIT!

 Kindle Paperwhite

It was essentially this:

I finally bought myself a Kindle Paperwhite! I was reading a blog where the blogger mentioned the fact that they always buy themselves a birthday gift. They always get themselves something that they really want, which gave me an idea! When Amazon sent me a 20% off Kindles code email it was a sign, so I bought it and treated myself for my birthday next week.

Winger (Winger, #1)
Winger by Andrew Smith

Ryan Dean West is a fourteen-year-old boy at a boarding school for rich kids. He's living in Opportunity Hall, the dorm for troublemakers, and rooming with the biggest bully on the rugby team. And he's madly in love with his best friend Annie, who thinks of him as a little boy.

With the help of his sense of humour, rugby buddies, and his penchant for doodling comics, Ryan Dean manages to survive life's complications and even find some happiness along the way. But when the unthinkable happens, he has to figure out how to hold on to what's important, even when it feels like everything has fallen apart.

Filled with hand-drawn illustrations and told in a pitch-perfect voice, this realistic depiction of a teen's experience strikes an exceptional balance of hilarious and heartbreaking.

Have heard so many amazing things about this book, so I treated myself yet again and bought it!

Blood Promise (Vampire Academy, #4) Spirit Bound (Vampire Academy, #5) Last Sacrifice (Vampire Academy, #6)

I am totally to binge read this series. I own the first three and borrowed the last three from work. Now I have them all I can finally make my way through them. Excited!!!

Bloodlines (Bloodlines, #1) The Golden Lily (Bloodlines, #2) The Indigo Spell (Bloodlines, #3) The Fiery Heart (Bloodlines, #4)

Sydney is an alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of human and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives. When Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, at first she thinks she's still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. But what unfolds is far worse. Jill Dragomir - the sister of Moroi Queen Lissa Dragomir - is in mortal danger, and the Moroi must send her into hiding. To avoid a civil war, Sydney is called upon to act as Jill's guardian and protector, posing as her roommate in the last place anyone would think to look for vampire royalty - a human boarding school in Palm Springs, California. But instead of finding safety at Amberwood Prep, Sydney discovers the drama is only just beginning...

I feel bad for Richelle Mead, she's written so many books and they all get given such hideous covers. Seriously, what's with all the truly terrible cover models?

Mortal Danger by Ann Aguirre
Mortal Danger (Immortal Game, #1)
Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Edie Kramer has a score to settle with the beautiful people at Blackbriar Academy. Their cruelty drove her to the brink of despair, and four months ago, she couldn't imagine being strong enough to face her senior year. But thanks to a Faustian compact with the enigmatic Kian, she has the power to make the bullies pay. She's not supposed to think about Kian once the deal is done, but devastating pain burns behind his unearthly beauty, and he's impossible to forget.

In one short summer, her entire life changes, and she sweeps through Blackbriar, prepped to take the beautiful people down from the inside. A whisper here, a look there, and suddenly... bad things are happening. It's a heady rush, seeing her tormentors get what they deserve, but things that seem too good to be true usually are, and soon, the pranks and payback turns from delicious to deadly. Edie is alone in a world teeming with secrets and fiends lurking in the shadows. In this murky morass of devil's bargains, she isn't sure who—or what--she can trust. Not even her own mind...

I've wanted to read this for ages but Netgalley said US preferred and other regions would probably be rejected, so I didn't request it. Finally decided to take the chance and see what happened. Was requested by the next day and I am so happy! Now, let's hope I end up loving it.

  1. I hate those covers too, I picked up the fourth book of Bloodlines myself, only one I have to read before the new one comes out. I binged the VA and Bloodlines at the beginning of the year. :D

  2. OMG TEAM CHAOL FOREVER AND EVER! I AM SO GLAD YOU LIKE IT!!!! *calms down slightly* But honestly....ohhhh, they just keep getting better. Though, fair warning, Crown of Midnight will cause feels. *ahem* Also, buying yourself a birthday present is the best thing ever. I approve. And that kindle looks so nice and shiny and beautiful. x) Congrats for getting approved for Mortal Danger! I'm sooo keen to see someone's review because it looks awesome. Well, the cover does anyway. That's mostly what I drool over. x)

  3. Apparently last night when I saw this post, you took it down and my comment kept getting deleted with errors! Very stressful since I was probably writing too much! LOL!

GREAT haul! I keep debating about getting a new kindle for myself and I am definitely leaning towards the paperwhite as well because I don't really need the fire to watch movies and stuff. I don't read too many ebooks anyway but the paperwhite looks nice!

Great books too! I loooove Vampire Academy and the Bloodline series! Still need to read the Fiery Heart myself, looking to do that pretty soon with the next one coming out!

And Mortal Danger! I actually really liked that one! It's quite different but I just really, really enjoyed it! It's definitely got the Faustus vibe going on with the whole making a deal with the devil, but there's sooo much more to it than that!

    Happy Reading!

My STS will be up tomorrow, so be sure to stop by then!

    Have a GREAT day!

  4. I love your blog design! Just stopping by for the first time. Looks like you had a great week in books. I need to get on reading the Richelle Mead books--I can't believe I haven't read Vampire Academy yet! Looks like you had a great week in books...enjoy!!

  5. Oooh, lots of Richelle Mead! Cooool. When I was just finishing secondary school, the Vampire Academy series was the only teen (now YA) book I could say I LOVED, aside from Darren Shan's The Demonata of course! Though, and I have no idea why, but I was put off by the spin-off series. I didn't like Sydney's character so I certainly didn't want to read a book with her as the protagonist!
Have fun reading!! (it seems like you've gotten out of your slump :3 )

AWW what a shame, I might have seen you! I went to London Film and Comic Con 2014 today, I wrote about it on my blog (<-- linky) so hopefully others can be aware of the pitfalls! It was great, I sat in for the YA Lit Con for Joe Abercrombie only, hahaha. And I got my book signed too :3 Have fun tomorrow!

    1. The VA series is one I really need to hurry up and read, I have heard such good things.

It was a ton of fun and I loved it, but there were so many problems too.

  6. I love my Kindle. It makes things a lot easier. You should treat yourself to things every once in a while I say. You got some great books. I loved the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead.
    Have a lovely weekend.

  7. Kindle changed my life! Maybe not that extreme, but close. I didn't think I'd get into reading books on it, but now I can't stand to read books any other way. I can enlarge the fonts so I can read while on my treadmill and I don't have to worry about trying to prop a book open to see it while I'm walking!

  8. You got an awesome haul! I don't have a kindle paperwhite (my mom does though and she loves it), I have an older version of the kindle, but my kindle is also my best friend. I am reading the Throne of Glass Prequel Novellas so I am glad that you liked the novel. I'm on the last one, and I'm excited to start the actual series!

  10. Chaol is so dreamy. I absolutely love him. When I first read ToG a few years ago he had no problem pushing his way to the almost top of my book boyfriends list. :) I'm soooo happy you're loving ToG. Just wait until Crown of Midnight. It is beyond ridiculously fantastic!
Yes! Birthday gifts to yourself are the best. And usually much needed. That's a great gift to get yourself. :D
I agree, Mead's cover are awful. I own them all but I'm really hoping they'll come out with a VA cover re-do sometime in the near future. That would be appreciated.
    Happy reading!

  12. Yay, so happy you're reading VA and Bloodlines…hope you love them! To be honest, I didn't love VA, but I was hooked by the second one, so just in case that happens to you, keep reading them!!!!

And yes, Throne of Glass…that's the way to get out of a reading slump. If you love Chaol now, just wait until Crown of Midnight.

Kindle Paper White, I love mine. What a great birthday present to yourself! ~Pam

  13. Yep, I agree with you about the crap covers. That's the advantage of being an Indie author-you get more control over your book covers! Enjoy your reads!
