Five Friday Favourites: Favourite Cover Changes

Five Friday Favourites is a weekly event hosted by Book Badger, where once a week, a five favourites subject is posted and everyone is welcome to join in. You can find out more about Five Friday Favourites and the future subjects here.

Favourite Cover Changes

The first thought that came to my mind was mid-series cover changes, which can be really frustrating but necessary in some cases. But then I started to think of cover changes that were made after the series were completed as well. Some cover changes are just incredible and I have rebought whole series I already own, just so I can have the beautiful new covers on my shelf. Yes, I am that person.

The Harry Potter Series

Jonny Duddle should be given medals. All of the medals! For me, the Harry Potter covers have always been the original Bloomsbury covers. They're not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, in fact I think they're ridiculously ugly. I mean, come on, have you seen Ron and Harry in that Chamber of Secrets cover? *shudders* But they were the originals and they have always been the Harry Potter covers to me. They have redone the covers so many times, but I'd never really loved any of the others either. Until Jonny Duddle created these amazingly beautiful covers! They're just gorgeous, capture some important scenes and I love the colours.

The Anna and the French Kiss Series

I know a lot of people didn't like the new Anna covers. They thought they were boring or didn't really say much about the story inside, like the originals did. But they needed to do something, because those original covers are embarrassing. It took me years to finally pick up Anna, that original cover had put me off so much. I like the new covers, I think they look beautiful sitting next to one another. I think the new covers won't put readers off picking the book up.

Shatter Me

What is that first cover even supposed to be? Nope! I don't even care if pretty eyes have nothing to do with this story, the new cover is stunning. S.T.U.N.N.I.N.G. And the rest of the series has equally stunning covers that much. Best cover change decision ever. Some girl in dress covers pull it off and are brilliant, Shatter Me was not one of those covers. Eyeballs for the win!

Throne of Glass

I love the UK covers, but the colours on the US hardcovers for the rest of the series were lovely. I wanted the series in hardback, but they only had the ugly US original for Throne of Glass. So of course, as soon as I buy the books in paperback, they release the new hardback cover to match the others in the series. I hate them! The original cover is just terrible and would not have made me want to pick that book up. That girl does not look like a scary assassin that is capable of slitting my throat. She also doesn't really look like Celeana is described.

His Dark Materials Series

I was browsing a bookshop one day when I saw these on display. I already own the whole series, but I had to have them. They are so stunning when you see them in person, parts of each cover are shiny and the colours are perfect. I liked that they kept elements from the old covers, the items they chose as well as the colour choice for each. The new covers are stunning, but they are easily recognisable as His Dark Materials.

Favourite Cover Trends

Starry Night Skies

They are just so pretty and I can't get enough of them. I am a total sucker for a starry night sky on a cover. I just love the colours that it requires, they work so well. I am immediately drawn to a book if it has a starry night cover.

Five Friday Favourites: Favourite Book Cover Typography

Five Friday Favourites is a weekly event hosted by Book Badger, where once a week, a five favourites subject is posted and everyone is welcome to join in. You can find out more about Five Friday Favourites and the future subjects here.

Favourite Book Cover Typography

Oooooh, good topic! I realise that typography on book covers is really important to me, but I don't feel like I realise I pay such close attention to it. But typography can actually make or break a book cover. A pretty cover can be ruined by really bad typography or one that just doesn't match up to the rest of the cover. I'm just going to go with typography on books I own.

Harry Potter

It makes me laugh that I am picking Harry Potter again. I picked all HP scenes for my FFF a few weeks ago, and Amanda told me I'd get past the series one day. Well, I'm currently writing this post as I lounge around in my Harry Potter Hogwarts pyjama top. So that day won't be any day soon.
The Harry Potter typography isn't the most gorgeous typography, but it's the most recognisable for me. You change the words and put it on another book and I'd know it's the Harry Potter typography. I absolutely love my new Harry Potter editions but I honestly miss the old typography!

Shadow & Bone
Throne of Glass
Under the Never Sky
Red Rising

THEY'RE ALL SO PRETTY!

I feel like I should probably have more to say than that, but I really don't. They're all gorgeous and I like them. They are pleasing to my eyes! Especially the Grisha series typography!

Five Friday Favourites: Favourite Finales

Favourite Finales

I saw this topic and thought it would be easy. But then I really thought about it. What series finales would I actually class as favourites. To be honest, I couldn't come up with very many. I love series and have completed a lot of series over the years, but I can't think of many finales that I would consider favourites. They weren't bad, I really enjoyed them but I didn't finish the series feeling completely satisfied. That's only really happened once.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter, #7)
Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows

I don't know what it is about J.K. Rowling, but she manages to get away with things no other author could. She created my favourite series of all time, some of my all time favourite book characters and she managed to give me a series finale that I was actually really happy with. I consider it a favourite because I love it despite the fact she broke my heart a million times. She killed off some of my favourite characters, had me sobbing from beginning to end and then did some weird epilogue that was a little out of place. And I loved every minute of it.

Fell (The Sight, #2) Into the Still Blue (Under the Never Sky, #3)
Fell by David Clement Davies | Into the Still Blue by Veronica Rossi

I really enjoyed both of these and they are definitely finales that I was happy with. I may have had one or two issues, but they were both 5/5 reads for me. They ended their respective series well and left me feeling satisfied.

Close, But No Cigar:

Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) Double Cross (Noughts & Crosses, #4) Champion (Legend, #3) The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, #3)
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins | Double Cross by Malorie Blackman | Champion by Marie Lu | The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman

Pretty much all of the series I've enjoyed have had endings that aren't terrible, but they aren't favourites either. I definitely need a Mockingjay reread because I don't remember too much of that book now, I just remember not feeling completely satisfied with it. Double Cross is actually a really great book, I just didn't love it as a series ender to Noughts & Crosses. So happy Malorie Blackman has hinted at a sequel. Champion was too soap opera like at the end, with the most ridiculous series ender scenario imaginable. And The Amber Spyglass was good but not everything I wanted from that book.

Ron, Hermione & Harry

You all knew this would be number one!
It's the ultimate friendship! DUH!

Five Friday Favourites: Favourite Book Scenes

Five Friday Favourites is a weekly event hosted by Book Badger, where once a week, a five favourites subject is posted and everyone is welcome to join in. You can find out more about Five Friday Favourites and the future subjects here.

Favourite Book Scenes

Oh dear, another topic where I can do nothing but have Harry Potter scenes. I'm sorry, it has to be done. The best bookish scenes are all from Harry Potter and that's a fact. But to choose 5! I am going to just try and do the first ones that pop into my head - and also try to avoid as many spoilers as possible for any of you crazy people who haven't read the books yet. What are you doing with your life? Go read Harry Potter!

"NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!"
from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

There are hundreds of scenes in the Harry Potter book series that I absolutely love. But this is one of the moments that gives me the most joy! It's just beyond perfect and I could not help myself from laughing out loud. So much had happened and my heart was breaking over the deaths of so many of my favourite characters. And then J.K. Rowling gives me this absolutely perfect moment! GO MOLLY!!!

Hermione & Ron Kiss
from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I waited years for that moment! It was wonderful and just such a squee worthy moment! I LOVED IT! I preferred how they did it in the book, but I wanted a gif to illustrate. In the book there is so much back story that goes into that kiss, with the house elves and everything! So much has built up to it and I love what makes Hermione finally give into her feelings for Ron! They are my ultimate OTP!

Any Quidditch Game

If I had to pick one then it would probably be from Prisoner of Azkaban. But all of the Quidditch games were so much fun to read. Rowling brings it to life and always makes me feel like I am a part of it. Not to mention that Lee Jordan's commentaries are the most hilarious things ever!

The Riddle House
from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

This was an amazing way to start the book. We see Frank, who's like the housekeeper/gardener, see lights on at the Riddle house, which should be empty. This is where we first get a glimpse of Voldemort in Goblet of Fire. It's such a creepy scene and a brilliant way to start the book off. I'd come to expect every Harry Potter book to open with Harry at the Dursley's, it was a pleasant, creepy, scary surprise to have it start off in such a dark place. It was a sign of things to come, a sign that the books were getting older and darker. I LOVED IT!

The Battle of Hogwarts
from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I am cheating, I am basically saying the last few hundred pages of the Deathly Hallows. But there are so many favourite moments within that. There's that Snape scene, you know the one! There's Harry telling Voldemort some home truths. Yeah... fuck you, Voldemort! There's all the fighting, the death and my never ending stream of tears.

There are so many more amazing moments that I don't get to mention! I have about 100 favourite Harry Potter scenes. But I am finally learning to restrain myself and actually stick to 5!

This whole post has made me so desperate for a Harry Potter reread!

Five Friday Favourites: Favourite Authors Of 2014 So Far

Five Friday Favourites is a weekly event hosted by Book Badger, where once a week, a five favourites subject is posted and everyone is welcome to join in. You can find out more about Five Friday Favourites and the future subjects here.

Favourite Authors of 2014 So Far

I've tried a lot of new to me authors in 2014, so I could say that's the reason it was hard to be five. It would be half true. I just really suck at picking five of something. But I have done it, I have actually stuck to picking just five! Amanda, I hope you're proud of me.

Sarah J. Maas

Could there be anyone else in that top spot? Nope! If you follow my reviews at all, you'll already know that I have become totally obsessed with Maas and her Throne of Glass series. I want to be able to meet her so I can thank her and shout at her, all at once. Her books are beyond amazing, with characters I can't help but adore, and I romance I ship so hard it's embarrassing. She earned herself a spot on my auto-buy list and her books are now on my favourites shelf, where they belong. For gushy, embarrassing reviews go here, here, here and here.

Abigail Haas

If I wasn't fangirling over Maas and her series, I was probably going on and on about this woman and her books. They're the most amazing YA psychological thrillers. If you haven't read them yet, what are you waiting for. Go pick them up! I guarantee you won't be disappointed. These books will mess with your mind, have you second guessing everything and suspecting everyone. You can read my review for Dangerous Girls here, and for Dangerous Boys go here.

E. Lockhart

I have actually only read one book by her this year, but it was a beyond amazing book and one of my top reads of the year so far. I can't even properly recommend this book to people, because you can't tell them anything about it. It's just best to go into it knowing absolutely nothing. That made reviewing it hilariously fun to do, trying to be as vague as possible - result can be seen here.

Veronica Rossi

I had wanted to read the Under the Never Sky series for so long, but kept putting it off. I was actually really worried that it was a series that wouldn't live up to the hype. I was nervous I would read it and just be left disappointed, wondering what all the fuss was about. Thankfully, I loved it. I binge read the series in less than a week and was itching to get my hands on more books by the author. She even co-wrote a New Adult novel, which was a lot of fun to read. You can read my trilogy reviews here #1, #2 & #3 and my review of Boomerang.

Kasie West

She writes some of the cutest contemporary romances. I just love the characters she creates, I find them so easy to relate to. Her books are full of such brilliant witty banter between the characters, I can't get enough of it. Her characters always have hilarious sense of humours, very similar to my own. I can't help but smile when reading a Kasie West book. I've reviewed four books by West this year - The Distance Between Us, Pivot Point, Split Second and On the Fence.

Five Friday Favourites: Favourite Books I Was Recommended

Five Friday Favourites is a weekly event hosted by Book Badger, where once a week, a five favourites subject is posted and everyone is welcome to join in. You can find out more about Five Friday Favourites and the future subjects here.

Favourite Books I Was Recommended

I was surprised by how hard I found this topic. I'd never really had many books recommended to me, at least not before I started blogging. I don't know many other people who a big readers like me, so I am usually always the one recommending books. I buy them as gifts for people, do displays for them at my work and generally go on and on about my favourite books to people. But now, thanks to the blog, I get to class all of your wonderful reviews and comments about books as recommendations. Thanks to you guys, I've discovered a lot of amazing books since I started blogging.

Five Friday Favourites: Favourite Book To Movie Adaptations

Five Friday Favourites is a weekly event hosted by Book Badger, where once a week, a five favourites subject is posted and everyone is welcome to join in. You can find out more about Five Friday Favourites and the future subjects here.

Favourite Book To Movie Adaptations

This weeks Five Friday Favourites is actually up to you! The wonderful Amanda is giving us the chance to pick our own topic. Hooray! Clearly I will have a million ideas and not be able to contain them all, will struggle for hours to pick between them, until finally I cave and choose one. Nope. I wish. It is only thanks to the fact I watched The Book Thief two days ago that I even have a topic this week. And that's favourite book to movie adaptations. Wooop! Combining two of my greatest loves: books and films!

The Book Thief

This is kind of cheating, I watched it as if it were just a film and not an adaptation. I only watched this two days ago and it astounded me. I loved it, every second of it. I didn't have one issue with it, nothing to pick apart. Was it an amazing adaptation? Who knows. I didn't reread before watching so didn't pick apart every little thing they did or didn't do. But they definitely took a beautiful, heartbreaking book and made a beautiful, heartbreaking movie. WATCH IT! (One small issue: The horribly photoshop job on the poster.)

Five Friday Favourites: Fav Books I've Read Between April & August

Five Friday Favourites is a weekly event hosted by Book Badger, where once a week, a five favourites subject is posted and everyone is welcome to join in. You can find out more about Five Friday Favourites and the future subjects here.

Yay! I am beyond happy for this topic because it gives me chance to share some love for some of my favourite reads of the year. I have read a lot of brilliant books this year, some especially brilliant ones between April and August, so I am very excited to share them with you.

The Throne of Glass Series

I am cheating and including all 3 books that are out and the novellas. These are AMAZING! I have become absolutely obsessed. Maas is evil, she abuses all of my feels and yet I love her for it and keep coming back for me. This series has a kick-ass heroine, a swoon-worthy romance and it definitely destroys your feels over and over again. I absolutely adore this series and just can't get enough of it, I need the next book. You can read my reviews for Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire and The Assassin's Blade.
