Films for Thoughts on Thursday: Inside Out

This is a weekly meme that I am hosting here at Reviews from a Bookworm. To take part all you have to do is share a movie review once a week, link back to Reviews from a Bookworm and add your link to the linky tool.

This weeks movie review will be for:
Inside Out

My feelings about Inside Out in one gif:

Yes, that is my exact feeling. WHY?!?!? Why did you give me such a promising trailer and then go and disappoint me? Why fool me with ridiculously good reviews? Why spend most of the movie with the two worst characters? Why was this so bloody depressing? And, seriously, why is everyone raving about this?

Am I the only human being who didn't think that Inside Out was an amazing movie? Well, I know I am not alone as my boyfriend and my sister both really didn't like it as well. But, other than those two, everyone else seems to think it was an amazing movie. NO! NO! NO!

I was so expecting to absolutely love this, it's so hard for me to have to write this review and talk about how much I didn't like it. I was so disappointed by this movie, and I feel so alone in my feelings. Please, someone out here in the blogosphere tell me you have seen this and didn't love it. It has a 98% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 90% audience rating. See, clearly I am alone in my opinion.

I don't think it was good that I went into this with ridiculously high expectations, but I couldn't help it. I'd seen amazing review after amazing review - some said this was Pixar at its best. And I'd loved the trailer and thought this looked absolutely hilarious. The trailer was rather misleading though and don't think it actually gave any real hint to what the movie was about. I had assumed it would be about more than one person and the personalities in their heads, seeing as that was all that was in the trailer. But it doesn't, it all concentrates on Riley, a teenage girl who is all mopey because she had to move. The funniest part of the whole film was the argument between Riley and her parents - you know, that scene we already saw in it entirety in the movie trailer.

Joy & Sadness are the two personalities we probably spend the most time with, and it is not good for my opinion of the movie - they are the two worst characters. Anger, Fear and Disgust are the real show stealer's in this film and they needed more time to shine. Instead we see Joy & Sadness go through failed attempt after failed attempt in getting back to headquarters. It became far too predictable because you knew every plan was going to fail. It made this movie really drag in places and I just wanted them to hurry up and figure their shit out.

5/10

I am so annoyed by this whole movie that I don't even want to write a decent review of it. I just want some explanation as to why everyone else seems to think it's so amazing? Tell me people, I missed it. I feel it looked amazing and had a brilliant premise, but that just didn't manage to really pull it off. If they ever do a sequel it needs to be in more than one head and it needs to concentrate more on the funny personalities. I'm going to go rage for a while, even typing this is pissing me off to the extreme. WHY DID YOU DISAPPOINT ME, PIXAR, WHY?

    1. Thank you. I really wanted to love it, but whilst the premise was amazing, the story itself was just a little dull and dragged too much.

  2. OMG I got really excited that you were reviewing this, and then I was appalled that you rated it so low! Aww. That makes me sad, my sister and I were so eager to see this. And yet, I'm kind of... not surprised? It must be difficult to set a movie inside peopleses heads. O_O And I agree that the trailer doesn't really give you a plot, just themes. e_e Still, I enjoyed this review! Thanks for sharing.

    1. It was good and I LOVED the premise, it's an AMAZING premise. But they just don't pull it off well because the story itself is quite weak.

  3. Oh I am sorry you disliked this one so much! I have seen so many people loving it, but I have heard some really bad things about it as well - that what is in the character's minds are so stereotypical as well. Like the dad only thinking about football, etc, and it is getting critique for that. But I haven't seen it myself and really haven't had much interest in seeing it either :/ Maybe I will somewhere along the line...

    1. It wasn't a terrible movie, I just ended up finding it really boring. The premise was amazing, but they failed to deliver in the story.

  5. Hi! I don't want to add to you feeling alone in not liking it - especially because I do understand how some people might not enjoy it if they were expecting something amazingly different and creative - but, since you asked, I'll tell you why I loved it.
See, I'm a psychologist and a therapist, and the whole premiss for me was amazing from the start. It's true, it is a little stereotypical in how it portrays moms, dads and teens (even though I think they were mostly trying to be funny and encompass a lot of people), and in how people react to certain things (such as moving).
But what was really brilliant, in my opinion, was how they tackled our internal dialogs (ones we don't even realize we have most of the time), and our control over our emotions. I loved the idea of teaching kids that we don't "control" our emotions, and they don't "control" us either, but it's really a relationship. We grow, and our emotions with us.
Another amazing thing, for me, was how they handled the Sadness/Joy relationship. I thought Joy was such a bully sometimes, and that can be true in our society nowadays. We are a happiness-driven society, which can be tiresome and often hurt our relationship to the world and ourselves. We are slaves to being happy, and feel so guilty (and forever discontent) when we are not - which just brings more guilt, and so on. To say that it's Ok to have all feelings, and that they can all be of use for us, is a really important message for people of all ages (many of my patients brought this discussion to me after watching the movie).
So, that's why I liked it. But hey, you don't have to, of course! I'm sorry you were disappointed, and I hope Pixar gets you next time! And I think it's great that you reviewed it, making other people who felt the same as you feel less alone (that's so important!). So, thanks for always putting your soul into your opinions. I really enjoy your blog!

    1. See I LOVED the premise and what they were trying to do. I think it was amazing. But I just didn't like the storytelling as I felt that was lacking. It wasn't entertaining enough, and I went to it to be entertained... not to just be blown away that they came up with this amazing premise. It should have had a better storyline, that didn't drag so much in the middle and a lot more humour. I am glad others loved it though, I just found it a bit too boring.

  6. Oh no, sad to hear you really didn't enjoy this - I've heard so many great reviews from people with really different tastes in films, I was sure it was a guaranteed winner and was really excited to see it. I'm seeing it tomorrow, so I'm going to go in with lower expectations now and hopefully won't be disappointed!

  7. Oh ffs. Sorry for my language, but this has so disappointed me. I thought this was going to be AMAZING, but now? Ugh, how crap. Thanks for being so honest, but I'm so gutted, it looked so good. *cries in corner*

    1. I might be the only one who feels like that though. The premise was amazing, but it just wasn't an entertaining enough film to keep me entertained when I was reading it.

  10. I often find that the trailers are the best part of the movie. See them and skip the disappointment of the full film is my motto. Sorry about this one not living up the hype.

  11. I was looking forward to watching this movie but now I'm not so sure. I usually share your same thoughts you have when I dislike a movie, so I might not watch this. Sorry you didn't like it, though!
