My Christmas Book Haul: Part 2

This week is a weird one, it feels like nothing and everything has happened at the same time. I don't even know how to explain that, so I won't even try! It's been a week of working, doctors visits, lots of sleeping and barely getting anything done.
I posted a quick Christmas catch up post, where I also explained why I'd been very absent from blogging recently. The response from all you wonderful people was so lovely and I thank you all for that. It made me feel a lot better and a lot less guilty. I'm feeling happier and looking forward to jumping back into blogging.

I'm linking up with Tynga's Stacking the Shelves.

The above photo is almost every single book I received for Christmas, except for two childhood favourites my mum got me. That's 75 books. CRAZY! Clearly they all listened to me when I said all I really wanted for Christmas was books. There were far too many to put into one post, so I decided to split them into two posts.

Horde (Razorland, #3)
Horde by Ann Aguirre

Yes, I continue to do that thing where I buy all the books in a series before I even start book one. It's a problem... but I can't stop myself from doing it.

Unteachable by Leah Raeder, The Distance Between Us by Kasie West, Ignite Me & Unite Me by Tahereh Mafi

Unteachable - This has been on my wishlist for so long! I have seen so many amazing reviews and I am so excited to finally be able to get to it.
The Distance Between Us - I've already read it, but it's a book I know I am going to want to reread.
Ignite Me & Unite Me - Yes, another time where I get the whole series before starting it.

Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken, Perfect Escape by Jennifer Brown, Thousand Words by Jennifer Brown and Hate List by Jennifer Brown

Never Fade - You guessed it, another book I am buying in preparation for reading the first book. I hate starting series and not having the sequel ready to read next.
Jennifer Brown - I read and loved Hate List a few years ago and have wanted to own it ever since. I've also wanted to try more Jennifer Brown, so I am really pleased to have two new JB books to get started on.

The Sea of Tranquility - This book has been on my wishlist for so long. I've heard amazing things and I'm probably going to read it and then kick myself for waiting so long to read it.
My Life with the Walter Boys - I've heard next to nothing about this book, but I saw one gushing review that had me adding it to my Christmas wishlist. I'm intrigued.
For Darkness Shows the Stars & Across a Star Swept Sea - Another series I've been meaning to try for so long now, but just never got to. Hopefully 2015 will be the year.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz, The Girl with all the Gifts by M. R. Carey, The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion and Stolen by Lucy Christopher

Aristotle and Dante - This is one of those books where I have heard nothing but amazing things, I really have no excuse for why I haven't got to it sooner. Although, I must admit, I hate the ridiculously long title.
The Girl with all the Gifts - Cait's love of this made me really want to read it.
The Rosie Project - Looks like a fun read and I need more fun reads in my life.
Stolen - It's been on my TBR for far too long.

Don't Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout, Me Before You by Jo Jo Moyes, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler and Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer

Don't Look Back - Amanda has made me really want to read this one!
Me Before You - I've wanted to read this for so long, but I am a little scared because it seems like a book that has the potential to make me cry.
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves - My sister recommended this to me, and also warned me to steer clear of any and all reviews until I have read it.
Belzhar - I'm torn! I've seen mixed reviews, which always makes me nervous about a book.

All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill and Across the Universe by Beth Revis

All Our Yesterdays - This one confuses me because I'm not sure if it will read as a standalone. I know the author had a sequel planned, but then cancelled it because she couldn't write one. Hopefully it has a satisfying ending, or that could be annoying.
Across the Universe - This was a present from Amanda and I am very excited to be able to try this series.

Children's Classics

The following books are all children's classics, ones I have wanted to read for so long now. I have seen movies for most of them and loved them, but never read the books when I was a child. Something I am hoping to change very soon.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling

Alice's Adventures in Wonerland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

The Christmas Catch-Up, Some Explaining and Some Blog Changes

dancing animated GIF
Happy New Year
That gif above is probably the most amazing thing in existence. It also means that Dumbledore can be excited about the new year for me, because I can't be bothered.

I've been a little absent from the blog recently, so I wanted to take the opportunity to talk about my Christmas and the last few weeks. I also want to address some a few things, mainly why I have been rather absent blog wise for the last few months and some few changes coming to the blog. But first... CHRISTMAS!

excited animated GIF Christmas was so much fun! My family went completely over the top, as usual, but we had so much fun together. Me and the boyfriend woke up early Christmas day, to spend time together before he went to work. I was so happy with my presents from him, lots and lots of books. After he went to work my dad came to get me to take me to my parents house. Me, my parents, my two sisters and one of their partners were there in the morning. It took as an hour and half to open presents, which was a lot of fun getting to see what they made of all their gifts.

new girl animated GIF I got so many cool presents, including a ton more books, lots of Harry Potter stuff and a very unexpected gift from my nan. She usually sends us a £20 cheque each, so we all nearly fainted when we opened them this year. We lost my grandad the year before, so this year she'd decided to send a large cheque to all the grandchildren, so we could enjoy the money whilst she's alive. One sister is planning her dream trip to Disneyland, the other is planning a Christmas trip to Hong Kong. And me... I'm still in shock. I think I might use it for a new laptop and a new camera. Maybe a holiday. Decisions aren't my strong suit.

We had a great meal and then one sister went off to pick up her girlfriend, whilst I went to pick up James from work. The evening was spent with us 8, then my cousins, uncle, cousins boyfriend, nan and adorably cute baby second cousin joined us. There was drinking, laughter, games and fun and I had the greatest time and loved every minute. Boxing Day was more of a relaxing day, where we mostly lazed around together and ate food and watched some movies. It was a great way to recover from a very busy Christmas day.

The day after Boxing Day was a day I was really looking forward to. We were all going on the Harry Potter Studio Tour. I'd already been once, with my eldest sister and her boyfriend, but this time it was during Christmas when they set the Great Hall up with all the Christmas trees and have the castle covered in snow. I couldn't wait! There were 8 of us and we all had a great day. I definitely recommend the tour for any Harry Potter fans out there, you won't regret it.

Some Explaining

I decided to start this post by talking about Christmas because it was something more lighthearted. But now that I am on to the more serious part of the blog post and I am not sure where to begin or what I even want to say. Let me start by saying that I'd felt for a while that I was having a blog and reading slump. It took a few months to realise it was something else entirely.

My Most Anticipated Debuts of 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at The Broke & The Bookish.

This weeks topic is:

My Most Anticipated Debuts of 2015

I actually have quite a lot of debuts that are am very excited for  this year! I am happy because I have quite a few of them sitting on my Kindle, waiting to be read. I'm hoping 2015 is going to be a great year for books for me, a ton of 5/5 reads. Fingers crossed!

Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers. To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change.Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the centre ofthose she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control. But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win?
This is one I have and am very desperate to get to, have been hearing nothing but amazing things.

My Heart and Other Black Holes
Aysel and Roman are practically strangers, but they've been drawn into an unthinkable partnership. In a month's time, they plan to commit suicide - together. Aysel knows why she wants to die: being the daughter of a murderer doesn't equal normal, well-adjusted teenager. But she can't figure out why handsome, popular Roman wants to end it all....and why he's even more determined than she is. With the deadline getting closer, something starts to grow between Aysel and Roman - a feeling she never thought she would experience. It seems there might be something to live for, after all - but is Aysel in so deep she can't turn back?

This book sounds amazing, but also like it may crush my soul. It feels like it might be an All the Bright Places style soul-crushing read. I'm not sure I'm ready for that!

The Sin Eater's Daughter (The Sin Eater's Daughter, #1)The Sin Eater's Daughter by Melinda Salisbury
Seventeen-year-old Twylla lives in the castle. But although she’s engaged to the prince, Twylla isn’t exactly a member of the court. She’s the executioner. As the Goddess embodied, Twylla instantly kills anyone she touches. Each month she’s taken to the prison and forced to lay her hands on those accused of treason. No one will ever love a girl with murder in her veins. Even the prince, whose royal blood supposedly makes him immune to Twylla’s fatal touch, avoids her company. But then a new guard arrives, a boy whose easy smile belies his deadly swordsmanship. And unlike the others, he’s able to look past Twylla’s executioner robes and see the girl, not the Goddess. Yet Twylla’s been promised to the prince, and knows what happens to people who cross the queen. However, a treasonous secret is the least of Twylla’s problems. The queen has a plan to destroy her enemies, a plan that requires a stomach-churning, unthinkable sacrifice. Will Twylla do what it takes to protect her kingdom? Or will she abandon her duty in favor of a doomed love?
Amazing sounding premise? Check. Stunning cover? Check. Grabby hands? Check. I will be meeting the author on the 24th of this month and can't wait to find out more about the book. I need this in my life.

Seven Days
This bold, compelling and topical story about bullying is told from the perspective of the bully and the bullied. You won't be able put it down until you've reached the conclusion. Jess's life is difficult enough without Kez picking on her – it’s turning school from a safe place into a nightmare. Kez has plenty of problems too but she finds comfort in knowing she is better off than Jess - or so she thinks. A hard-hitting and even-handed look at bullying and the issues facing teenagers today.
I'll be meeting this author on the 24th as well. This book has been on my radar for quite some time and I think it sounds so good. I do wonder why I keep picking books that sound like they are going to depress the hell out of me.

The Night We Said YesThe Night We Said Yes by Lauren Gibaldi
Before Matt, Ella had a plan. Get over a no-good ex-boyfriend. Graduate from high school without any more distractions. Move away from Orlando, Florida, where she’s lived her entire life. But Matt—the cute, shy, bespectacled bass player who just moved to town—was never part of that plan. And neither was attending a party that was crashed by the cops just minutes after they arrived. Or spending an entire night saying “yes” to every crazy, fun thing they could think of.Then Matt abruptly left town, and he broke not only Ella’s heart but those of their best friends, too. So when he shows up a year later with a plan of his own—to relive the night that brought them together—Ella isn’t sure whether Matt’s worth a second chance. Or if re-creating the past can help them create a different future. In alternating then and now chapters, debut author Lauren Gibaldi crafts a charming, romantic story of first loves, lifelong friendships, uncovered secrets, and, ultimately, finding out how to be brave.
This one seems like a more light-hearted read and possibly with some fluff thrown in. Bring it on.

None of the Above
A groundbreaking story about a teenage girl who discovers she's intersex . . . and what happens when her secret is revealed to the entire school. Incredibly compelling and sensitively told, None of the Above is a thought-provoking novel that explores what it means to be a boy, a girl, or something in between. What if everything you knew about yourself changed in an instant? When Kristin Lattimer is voted homecoming queen, it seems like another piece of her ideal life has fallen into place. She's a champion hurdler with a full scholarship to college and she's madly in love with her boyfriend. In fact, she's decided that she's ready to take things to the next level with him.But Kristin's first time isn't the perfect moment she's planned--something is very wrong. A visit to the doctor reveals the truth: Kristin is intersex, which means that though she outwardly looks like a girl, she has male chromosomes, not to mention boy "parts."Dealing with her body is difficult enough, but when her diagnosis is leaked to the whole school, Kristin's entire identity is thrown into question. As her world unravels, can she come to terms with her new self?

A very unique sounding story and one I haven't come across before. I am very curious... very curious!

Playlist for the DeadPlaylist for the Dead by Michelle Falkoff
A teenage boy tries to understand his best friend's suicide by listening to the playlist of songs he left behind in this smart, voice-driven debut novel. Here's what Sam knows: There was a party. There was a fight. The next morning, his best friend, Hayden, was dead. And all he left Sam was a playlist of songs, and a suicide note: For Sam—listen and you'll understand. As he listens to song after song, Sam tries to face up to what happened the night Hayden killed himself. But it's only by taking out his earbuds and opening his eyes to the people around him that he will finally be able to piece together his best friend’s story. And maybe have a chance to change his own.Part mystery, part love story, and part coming-of-age tale in the vein of Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Tim Tharp’s The Spectacular NowPlaylist for the Dead is an honest and gut-wrenching first novel about loss, rage, what it feels like to outgrow a friendship that's always defined you—and the struggle to redefine yourself. But above all, it's about finding hope when hope seems like the hardest thing to find.
Another one that is probably going to make me want to cry. Why do I do this to myself?

Last Year's Mistake
Before:Kelsey and David became best friends the summer before freshman year and were inseparable ever after. Until the night a misunderstanding turned Kelsey into the school joke, and everything around her crumbled—including her friendship with David. So when Kelsey's parents decided to move away, she couldn't wait to start over and leave the past behind. Except, David wasn't ready to let her go...After:Now it's senior year and Kelsey has a new group of friends, genuine popularity, and a hot boyfriend. Her life is perfect. That is, until David's family moves to town and he shakes up everything. Soon old feelings bubble to the surface and threaten to destroy Kelsey's second chance at happiness. The more time she spends with David, the more she realizes she never truly let him go. And maybe she never wants to.

Another one that seems it will be more of a light-hearted, fluffy read. At least I hope so. I don't want 2015 to just be filled with soul-destroying books.

Not After EverythingNot After Everything by Michelle Levy
Tyler has a football scholarship to Stanford, a hot colgirlfriend, and a reliable army of friends to party with. Then his mom kills herself. And Tyler lets it all go. Now he needs to dodge what his dad is offering (verbal tirades and abuse) and earn what his dad isn’t (money). Tyler finds a job that crashes him into Jordyn, his former childhood friend turned angry-loner goth-girl. She brings Tyler an unexpected reprieve from the never-ending pity party his life has become. How could he not fall for her? But with his dad more brutally unpredictable than ever, Tyler knows he can’t risk bringing Jordyn too deeply into the chaos. So when violence rocks his world again, will it be Jordyn who shows him the way to a hopeful future? Or after everything, will Tyler have to find it in himself?
I don't know what to expect from this one... but I want to read it.

Because You'll Never Meet Me
In a stunning literary debut, two boys on opposite ends of the world begin an unlikely friendship that will change their lives forever.Ollie and Moritz are best friends, but they can never meet. Ollie is allergic to electricity. Contact with it causes debilitating seizures. Moritz’s weak heart is kept pumping by an electronic pacemaker. If they ever did meet, Ollie would seize. But Moritz would die without his pacemaker. Both hermits from society, the boys develop a fierce bond through letters that become a lifeline during dark times—as Ollie loses his only friend, Liz, to the normalcy of high school and Moritz deals with a bully set on destroying him.A story of impossible friendship and hope under strange circumstances, this debut is powerful, dark and humorous in equal measure. These extraordinary voices bring readers into the hearts and minds of two special boys who, like many teens, are just waiting for their moment to shine.

I'm hoping this one will be more of an uplifting read and will make me happy, which will probably still make me cry. I feel like I'm going to be crying a lot in 2015. We shall see. Nothing can be worse than the All the Bright Places tears though.

My Christmas Book Haul: Part 1

I'm actually doing a Christmas catch up post on Monday, so I'll talk about the last two weeks in full there. It will also be talking about some blogging changes that are coming, nothing too major so don't worry. I'm not quitting or anything. There's just a few things being addressed in that.

The main thing to know about my last two weeks is that I had a great time. I didn't have to work, which felt absolutely incredible. I spent an amazing Christmas day with my family, got some beyond amazing presents and way more books than I could have imagined. There was food, drinking, laughter, games and so much fun. I loved every minute of it.

On Boxing Day we all went to the Harry Potter Studio Tour, which was so much fun. It was my second time going, but this time it was during the Christmas period - so the Great Hall is decorated for Christmas and the castle is snow covered. We had a great day and I really enjoyed it.

The above photo is almost every single book I received for Christmas, except for two childhood favourites my mum got me. That's 75 books. CRAZY! Clearly they all listened to me when I said all I really wanted for Christmas was books. There are far too many books for me to put in one post though, so I'll be splitting the books up and posting over two or three posts. I also won't be posting the blurbs for all the books and series, just because it would make these posts far too long.

Something Real by Heather Demetrios
Something RealSeventeen-year-old Bonnie™ Baker has grown up on TV—she and her twelve siblings are the stars of one-time hit reality show Baker’s Dozen. Since the show's cancellation, Bonnie™ has tried to live a normal life, under the radar and out of the spotlight. But it's about to fall apart . . . because Baker’s Dozen is going back on the air. Bonnie™'s mom and the show's producers won't let her quit and soon the life that she has so carefully built for herself, with real friends (and maybe even a real boyfriend), is in danger of being destroyed by the show. Bonnie™ needs to do something drastic if her life is ever going to be her own—even if it means being more exposed than ever before.
I have wanted to read this for so long because of all the wonderful reviews. I hope I love it, I didn't have much luck with the authors latest book Exquisite Captive, but hopefully this works out well.

Only Ever Yours by Louise O'Neill

Only Ever Yoursfreida and isabel have been best friends their whole lives.
Now , aged sixteen and in their final year at the School, they expect to be selected as companions - wives to wealthy and powerful men. The alternative - life as a concubine - is too horrible to contemplate.
But as the intensity of the final year takes hold, the pressure to remain perfect becomes almost unbearable. isabel starts to self-destruct, putting her beauty - her only asset - in peril.
And then, the boys arrive, eager to choose a bride.
frieda must fight for her future - even if it means betraying the only friend, the only love, she has ever known...
I had to buy myself this one after reading some very glowing reviews. I've just become ridiculously curious about it. For example, why do names no longer have capital letters, it pains my eyes.

Childhood Favourites
Beeswax the Bad by Andrew Martyr, P. Lawford
Dr. Dog by Babette Cole

My parents got each of us sisters a copy of Beeswax the Bad, which was our favourite book as children. It's such a funny book and I loved it when I was little. Dr. Dog is another classic, so I was beyond happy to receive both of those.

Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch, The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings, Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins and Of Metal and Wishes by

Snow Like Ashes - *flails* I HAVE IT! I must read it and love it.
The Murder Complex - I went back and forth on this one for so long but Bookstagram has sold me on it.
Rebel Belle - This one seems like it will be a fun read, plus I have the sequel waiting to be read, so I will be getting to it very soon.
Of Metal and Wishes - A retelling of Phantom of the Opera, I don't need to know anything else. SOLD!

Talon by Julie Kagawa, Uninvited by Sophie Jordan and Loop by Karen Akins

Talon - YAY! I held off on downloading this from Netgalley because I was hoping I'd receive it for Christmas. I squealed with excitement when I opened this one. I have it and it's one of the prettiest books I've ever seen. Let's hope the story is as good as the cover.
Uninvited - I read and loved this earlier in the year and I needed it on my shelf.
Loop - Another book I suddenly wanted to read thanks to Bookstagram. Love the cover for this one too.

Doon and Destined for Doon by Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon

Very excited to find these two under my tree, this series really intrigues me.

Half-Blood, Pure, Deity and Apollyon by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Cinder, Scarlet and Cress by Marissa Meyer

I've already read Cinder and Scarlet, but now I can finally binge read them and get to Cress. I hear it's the best of the three, so bring it on.

This one made it onto my Christmas list because I was curious to see how it ended. I read and enjoyed one, once I finally got into it, but then was really unhappy with book two. Then I just had a really sudden urge to see how it all ended. I've heard nothing but terrible things about Raging Star since then though, so now I am scared.

Rot & Ruin, Dust & Decay, Flesh & Bone and Fire & Ash by Jonathan Maberry

I've been saying I'm going to read this series for so long now. I've been wanting to read a good zombie story for quite some time.

Another series I've been saying I'll read forever. I'm hoping owning these series will get me into reading them... but who knows.

James wins points for knowing I wouldn't want book 6 when it's in the larger paperback. Hurry up and release the small one. I want to try this series again, I once read book one and didn't like it, Cait's love of it has made me curious.

I read and loved the authors other dystopian series so I am very hopeful when it comes to this one.

Blood PromiseSpirit Bound and Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

I had books 1-3, but finally having the last 3 means that I can binge read this. I am so desperate to love this series.

Reached by Ally Condie, Flame by Amy Kathleen Ryan & Defector by Susanne Winnacker

It was bothering me that I owned the first two books in both these trilogies but not the final books. I've read Reached before, but still need to get to Flame. Defector, the sequel to Impostor, is one that Amanda was kind enough to gift me for Christmas.

Golden Son by Pierce Brown
Golden Son (Red Rising Trilogy, #2)With shades of The Hunger GamesEnder’s Game, and Game of Thrones, debut author Pierce Brown’s genre-defying epic Red Rising hit the ground running and wasted no time becoming a sensation. Golden Son continues the stunning saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom from the overlords of a brutal elitist future built on lies. Now fully embedded among the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his work to bring down Society from within. A life-or-death tale of vengeance with an unforgettable hero at its heart, Golden Songuarantees Pierce Brown’s continuing status as one of fiction’s most exciting new voices
I might have flailed far too much when I received this. Thank you so much to Hodder & Stoughton for this beautiful hardback. It's so pretty.... soooooo pretty.

All Fall Down by Ally Carter
All Fall Down (Embassy Row, #1)Grace can best be described as a daredevil, an Army brat, and a rebel. She is also the only granddaughter of perhaps the most powerful ambassador in the world and Grace has spent every summer of her childhood running across the roofs of Embassy Row.Now, at age sixteen, she's come back to stay - in order to solve the mystery of her mother's death. In the process, she uncovers an international conspiracy of unsettling proportions, and must choose her friends and watch her foes carefully if she and the world are to be saved.

There's no way this won't be awesome.

20 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Me

Yes, I did start singing the song from The King & I because of the above words, that's just who I am. Rachel was kind enough to tag me for the 20 things tag. So now you shall get to find out a few things about me that you might not have known, and probably didn't really care to know. But it's happening, so get ready!

1. How tall are you?

Could you define tall for me? I'm going to be honest here, the word tall has never been used to describe me, unless it was in comparison to a really small child. I am 5ft and 0.1 of an inch short. And yes, I do think that 0.1 of an inch is important enough to mention. It means buying jeans is a nightmare, I can't reach the top or middle shelves of my kitchen cabinets and I get asked for ID for almost everything.

2. Do you have a hidden talent? If so, what?

no animated GIF Yes, it's so hidden that I am yet to find it! I can play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the guitar, but my guitar playing abilities is limited to that. I'm incredibly talented in the art of pen losing, I don't think there is anyone better at it in the world. I've also got quite a talent for making my monthly pay suddenly disappear within a week of receiving it. And then all of a sudden all these books appear in my life, but I am sure that's just a coincidence.

3. What's your biggest blogging related pet-peeve?

Is this my pet peeve in regards to my blogging and blog, or other blogs. I'm not sure. I'd have to agree with Rachel on this one, it's when I have scheduled a post whilst it was half finished, been too busy to complete it and then it's gone live half-finished. But that's more like a pet-peeve about my own stupidity, so not quite sure that counts.

4. What's your biggest non-blogging related pet-peeve?

I have far too many of them. My biggest one is rude people, especially when I'm at work. I work in a library, but not the nice, quiet library you're probably thinking of. It's a busy library in London and some of the people I come across make me want to hurt them... a lot. The worst one is a guy that comes in a lot who basically snaps his fingers at you, never says please or thank you, and is just a really rude person. So biggest pet-peeve will go to arseholes who don't say please or thank you.

5. What's your favourite song?

Is it even possible to pick a favourite song? I have been listening to a lot of Ed Sheeran lately, who I absolutely love. And I'm incredibly excited for Imagine Dragons new album. But there's no way I could pick a favourite song.
