My Weekly Book Haul: 09/08/2014

STSmall

Friday Finds is something that was started over on ShouldBeReading and Stacking the Shelves over at TyngaReviews, I am in love with all of these as I love finding other blogs to follow and books to read through these! So check them all out and see what you find, Stacking the Shelves has a lot of participants as well which is great. This is basically a way for me to show what books I have received, borrowed or bought each week. All book covers and their summary come from back of book or Goodreads.

I've honestly been being the worst blogger lately, I've been having a rather stressful last few weeks. But, thankfully, in the last few days I have been trying my hardest to work on that and be a better blogger. I don't have all my reviews written up, I have about 6 waiting, but I have done 2 of them. I have also started posting again and, finally, visiting people back and replying to over 200 comments. I feel a lot better for it and proud of myself!
Kitten in a BOW TIE!!!

I have still been distracted by my adorable new kitten. I know you're all just dying for another picture and who am I to say no!

We took her for her vet visit and, as we suspected, it turns out she has only just reached 8 weeks. That means she was only 5 weeks when we bought her and I am really angry about it. She's almost doubled her weight since we got her though, she runs around like a crazy person and the vet says she has no health issues. YAY! She does keep nuzzling the blanket we bought her, poor thing.

Four: A Divergent CollectionSince You've Been Gone   Trial by Fire (The Worldwalker Trilogy, #1)

Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick

Forgive Me, Leonard PeacockHow would you spend your birthday if you knew it would be your last?
Eighteen-year-old Leonard Peacock knows exactly what he'll do. He'll say goodbye.
Not to his mum - who he calls Linda because it annoys her - who's moved out and left him to fend for himself. Nor to his former best friend, whose torments have driven him to consider committing the unthinkable. But to his four friends: a Humphrey-Bogart-obsessed neighbour, a teenage violin virtuoso, a pastor's daughter and a teacher.
Most of the time, Leonard believes he's weird and sad but these friends have made him think that maybe he's not. He wants to thank them, and say goodbye.

Got this for just £2 at my favourite Oxfam bookshop. Bargain!

Landline by Eleanor & Park

LandlineGeorgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble. That it’s been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply — but that almost seems besides the point now.
Maybe that was always besides the point.
Two days before they’re supposed to visit Neal’s family in Omaha for Christmas, Georgie tells Neal that she can’t go. She’s a TV writer, and something’s come up on her show; she has to stay in Los Angeles. She knows that Neal will be upset with her — Neal is always a little upset with Georgie — but she doesn’t expect to him to pack up the kids and go home without her.
When her husband and the kids leave for the airport, Georgie wonders if she’s finally done it. If she’s ruined everything.
That night, Georgie discovers a way to communicate with Neal in the past. It’s not time travel, not exactly, but she feels like she’s been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts . . .
Is that what she’s supposed to do?
Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?

I bought a signed copy of this, so I really hope I end up loving it.

Little Mercies by Heather Gudenkauf

Little MerciesSometimes, one small mistake can have life-altering consequences...
Social worker Ellen Moore has seen the worst side of humanity – the vilest acts one person can commit against another. She is a fiercely dedicated children’s advocate and a devoted wife and mother.
But one blistering summer day, a simple moment of distraction has repercussions that threaten to shatter everything Ellen holds dear, trapping her between the gears of the system she works for.

Got this at the Oxfam shop as well, a new copy for only £2! Oxfam are amazing.

Unforgotten by Jessica Brody
Unforgotten (Unremembered, #2)

After a daring escape from the scientists at Diotech who created her, Seraphina believes she is finally safe from the horrors of her past. But new threats await her and her boyfriend, Zen, at every turn as Zen falls prey to a mysterious illness and Sera’s extraordinary abilities make it more and more difficult to stay hidden. Meanwhile, Diotech has developed a dangerous new weapon designed to apprehend her, a weapon that even Sera will be powerless to stop. Her only hope of saving Zen’s life and defeating the company that made her is a secret buried deep within her mind. A secret that Diotech will kill to protect.

I have the first one and plan to read it very soon. Saw this in Oxfam for £2, it's new and hasn't even been read. How could I say no? Doesn't match my cover for book 1 though, will definite by the other Unremembered cover if I end up loving it though.

Beautiful Oblivion by Jamie McGuire

Beautiful Oblivion (Maddox Brothers, #1)Fiercely independent Camille "Cami" Camlin gladly moved on from her childhood before it was over. She has held down a job since before she could drive, and moved into her own apartment after her freshman year of college. Now tending bar at The Red Door, Cami doesn’t have time for much else besides work and classes, until a trip to see her boyfriend is cancelled, leaving her with a first weekend off in almost a year.
Trenton Maddox was the king of Eastern State University, dating co-eds before he even graduated high school. His friends wanted to be him, and women wanted to tame him, but after a tragic accident turned his world upside down, Trenton leaves campus to come to grips with the crushing guilt.
Eighteen months later, Trenton is living at home with his widower father, and works full-time at a local tattoo parlor to help with the bills. Just when he thinks his life is returning to normal, he notices Cami sitting alone at a table at The Red.
As the baby sister of four rowdy brothers, Cami believes she’ll have no problem keeping her new friendship with Trenton Maddox strictly platonic. But when a Maddox boy falls in love, he loves forever—even if she is the only reason their already broken family could fall apart.

If you've been following the blog for a while then you'll know how much I despised Beautiful Disaster and it's main characters. I bought this from Oxfam because it was £2 for a brand new copy, I want to give the author a second chance and if I end up hating it I can just give it away.

Pawn by Aimee Carter

Pawn (The Blackcoat Rebellion, #1)YOU CAN BE A VII IF YOU GIVE EVERYTHING.
For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.
If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked - surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.
There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed, and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

I read this as an eARC and enjoyed it quite a bit. I saw this in Oxfam for a £1 and decided to buy it, I can reread it before the sequel comes out.

Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

Ugly LoveWhen Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she doesn't think it's love at first sight. They wouldn't even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn't want love, she doesn't have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.
Never ask about the past.
Don't expect a future.

They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can't handle it at all.
Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.

Have already read it and I really, really enjoyed it. Even though I had so many problems with it. Colleen Hoover is a tricksy woman!!!!

Sinner by Maggie Stiefvater
Sinner
Sinner follows Cole St. Clair, a pivotal character from the #1 New York Times bestselling Shiver Trilogy. Everybody thinks they know Cole's story. Stardom. Addiction. Downfall. Disappearance. But only a few people know Cole's darkest secret -- his ability to shift into a wolf. One of these people is Isabel. At one point, they may have even loved each other. But that feels like a lifetime ago. Now Cole is back. Back in the spotlight. Back in the danger zone. Back in Isabel's life. Can this sinner be saved?

I have owned the three other books in this series for years now, never read them. I love all of Cait at the Notebook Sister's posts about her love for Maggie Steifvater. It's convinced me to pick up this book, read the first three and then get straight to this. I hope I love them all.

Four by Veronica Roth

Four: A Divergent CollectionThis collection of short stories explores the world of the Divergent series through the eyes of the mysterious but charismatic Tobias Eaton, revealing previously unknown secrets of his personality and intriguing backstory. See how it all began for Four...Features the following stories: 'The Transfer', 'The Initiate', 'The Son', 'The Traitor' and three exclusive scenes.

Firstly, it's not Tobias Eaton it's FOUR! Tobias is an awful name... so NO, just no! Secondly, after the abysmal book that was Allegiant, I had sworn off reading any more books by Roth. That book read like a first draft that needed a lot of work, and don't get me started on how Four's POV sounded just like Tris. She better redeem herself with this or we will be done for good!

Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Since You've Been GoneIt was Sloane who yanked Emily out of her shell and made life 100% interesting. But right before what should have been the most epic summer, Sloane just...disappears. All she leaves behind is a to-do list.
On it, thirteen Sloane-inspired tasks that Emily would normally never try. But what if they could bring her best friend back?
Apple picking at night?
Okay, easy enough.
Dance until dawn?
Sure. Why not?
Kiss a stranger?
Um...

Emily now has this unexpected summer, and the help of Frank Porter (totally unexpected), to check things off Sloane's list. Who knows what she'll find?
Go skinny-dipping?
Wait...what?

I think this book might have already been ruined for me by a rather stupid blogger. Who, in a post, gave away basically the basic synopsis of this book and then the end twist, whilst saying that it wasn't a spoiler. I want to hunt them down and hit them. Now tempted not to read it.

Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini

Trial by Fire (The Worldwalker Trilogy, #1)Love burns. Worlds collide. Magic reigns.
This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying many of the experiences that other teenagers take for granted...which is why she is determined to enjoy her first (and perhaps only) high-school party. But Lily's life never goes according to plan, and after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class Lily wishes she could just disappear.
Suddenly Lily is in a different Salem - one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruellest of all the Crucibles is Lillian . . . Lily's identical other self in this alternate universe. This new version of her world is terrifyingly sensual, and Lily is soon overwhelmed by new experiences.
Lily realizes that what makes her weak at home is exactly what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. It also puts her life in danger. Thrown into a world she doesn't understand, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can't hope to shoulder alone, and a love she never expected.
But how can Lily be the saviour of this world when she is literally her own worst enemy?

I AM SO EFFING EXCITED! Thank you, PanMacmillan... I LOVE YOU ALL!
I cannot wait to read this one, diving straight in today.

  1. Aww! Your kitty is just too cute!

Nice book haul too! glad you're slowly getting your blogging groove back! Blogging should always be something fun, don't let it turn into something that feels like a job! But yay for coming back!

I loooove these UK covers! Guess I'm always used to our US ones! Sinner is awesome! Love how Four--still need to read that!--looks similar to your UK covers of the Divergent trilogy. Our Four kinda resembles our Divergent one as well too I guess! Trial by Fire is another beautiful cover! Love it! And the book itself was great too!

And how funny! *sneak peek* I got Unforgotten this week too! ;)

My STS will be up on Sunday, so stop by then if you can!

    Have a GREAT day!

    1. Exactly, I am trying to do it when I feel like it and not feel completely pressured by it :)

I love the Sinner cover, definitely prefer it to the US one I have seen. Yes, I am not sure about the Four one but I think it looks okay but not anything special.

      I'll definitely stop by! :)

Seems like everyone got Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover. I feel so left out! From all the books you got I only have read Pawn. It wasn't a great book for me. I think I once called it the strangest dystopian book I've ever read. lol. But of course I hope you'll like it more.

    Happy Reading!

  6. Naw your kitty is so cute!! Love the bowtie too.

There's quite a few books here I want/ have and haven't read yet. I totally agree with how much of an awful name Tobias is. Blegh.

That really, really sucks that someone spoiled Since You've Been Gone. Even if you don't think something is a spoiler, you should totally always put a warning at the beginning of the review so people know. I can't wait to read it even more now so I can find out what it is!

I knew when I brought her home but I was still really angry the people I got her from didn't want to keep her past the 4 weeks. She nuzzled blankets a lot and she was always trying to nurse on my other dog...who was a boy lol

I recently ordered Ugly Love and I am super stoked to read it! I absolutely loved Maybe Someday and I can't wait to read another book by her! Beautiful Oblivion was also good. It wasn't my favorite book but it was a quick read.

I hope you enjoy all the books you got! :)

  18. Hehe....hunting down bloggers and smacking them. YES. I've actually *cough* had that happen form one of Cassandra Clare's series, where it wasn't even a review or spoiler warning or ANYTHING, the blogger just busted out randomly talking about the love-triangle and how it turned out. And I was just.... *shakes fist* I really hate books being spoiled.

I FEEL LIKE A BAD BLOGGER TO RIGHT NOW. I have posts to post, but I'm so slack on answering comments and getting to everyone's blogs right now. Ughhhh. Don't feel bad. Or at least, hehe, I'll feel bad with you. XD

Oh and did I mention that I FREAKING LOVE MAGGIE STIEFVATER AND AAAAAALL HER BOOKS AND AFKSDJADFSFD I HOPE YOU ENJOY SINNER. Though I won't scowl at you if you don't. But seriously, Cole is adorable and Isabel is snarky and I just ship them so so hard.

Aaaand, I loved Leonard Peacock though it's seriously depressing and I wasn't 100% happy with the end, but I still gave it, like, 5-stars I think. I was bawling. HEHE. Mime read Unremembered and hated it, lol! So I'm probably not going for that series. It's awesome having a sister who reads because you cover more ground that way and warn each other away from dodgy books. ;) And I want to read Four so so sooo bad. OKAY I'LL FINISH THIS MEGA LONG COMMENT. YES. SORRY ABOUT THAT. XD XD

  30. Aww your kitten is adorable! I have a similar story with our cat, when we bought her she was so small, and the vet was so, so angry he made a call to animal services about the store. But now she has you to take care of her, so she'll be great :)

And your book haul... well, it is glorious. I loved Pawn too and cannot wait for Captive! And I seriously NEED to read at least half of your book haul. OH- and the Four stories... they were decent. Actually, I'd read one before Allegiant came out (the first one was released in the US before the massacre) and apparently I rated it 5 stars. I think I was a bit harsher on the other three though, but I did still enjoy them, despite Allegiant (which, I am trying to block from my memory). Also, boo to whoever ruined Since You've Been Gone for you! I haven't read it yet, but that would make me SO angry. Why do people spoil books/movies/TV? Just why? It's kind of evil! Hope you enjoy your non-spoiled books and have a great week :)

  33. Ugh, terrible if people lie about the age of the kittens. It is really not good for them to be away from their mother so young. Luckily your little kitten did not suffer any damage. Ours was also a little bit to young and he has the funny habit of sucking on his tail. It is endearing really! You have some great reads :). Heard great things about Ugly Love. I am so a new fangirl of Morgan Matson. I recently finished Second Chance Summer and it was so good. I really can't wait to get my hands on Since You've Been Gone. Happy reading!

The series by Maggie Stiefvater is pretty good, I read the first two but kind of drifted away from them and never finished the third. Had no idea there was going to be a fourth! Maybe I'll pick them up again and finish it out. Happy reading!
