My Weekly Book Haul: YALC Edition Part 2

STSmall

Friday Finds is something that was started over on ShouldBeReading and Stacking the Shelves over at TyngaReviews, I am in love with all of these as I love finding other blogs to follow and books to read through these! So check them all out and see what you find, Stacking the Shelves has a lot of participants as well which is great. This is basically a way for me to show what books I have received, borrowed or bought each week. All book covers and their summary come from back of book or Goodreads.

I had a nice week off from the blog, I was supposed to come back all refreshed and ready to schedule posts and get down to some hardcore blogging. I failed. I have been the most useless blogger this week and my blogger guilt is becoming too much. I haven't replied to comments, I haven't wrote up reviews, I haven't visited many blogs back. I just haven't had the time, energy, patience or right mindset. I have read a lot this week, which I needed and am pleased about. I definitely pledge to be a better blogger when I finally get some time off work. I've just done a swap of shifts to get away from a bad situation at work so that's been stressful but a huge relief at the same time. I pledge to be a better blogger when I get my week off. Pinky promise!

I have still been totally sidetracked by the new kitten! My sister still insists she's Lilo and I still insist on calling her Lola. Let me just bombard you with cute kitten pictures:

This is from day 2! I was much more controlled.

Geek Girl (Geek Girl, #1) Model Misfit (Geek Girl, #2)
Geek Girl & Model Misfit by Holly Smalle

Harriet Manners knows a lot of things.
She knows that a cat has 32 muscles in each ear, a "jiffy" lasts 1/100th of a second, and the average person laughs 15 times per day. What she isn't quite so sure about is why nobody at school seems to like her very much. So when she's spotted by a top model agent, Harriet grabs the chance to reinvent herself. Even if it means stealing her Best Friend's dream, incurring the wrath of her arch enemy Alexa, and repeatedly humiliating herself in front of the impossibly handsome supermodel Nick. Even if it means lying to the people she loves.
As Harriet veers from one couture disaster to the next with the help of her overly enthusiastic father and her uber-geeky stalker, Toby, she begins to realise that the world of fashion doesn't seem to like her any more than the real world did.
And as her old life starts to fall apart, the question is: will Harriet be able to transform herself before she ruins everything?

I loved seeing Holly Smalle at one of the YALC panels, she was a lot of fun and I loved her personality. I have been wanting to read this series for so long so I bought the first two and got them signed on the day.

Undone
Undone by Cat Clarke

Jem Halliday is in love with her gay best friend. Not exactly ideal, but she's learning to live with it.
Then the unspeakable happens. Kai is outed online ... and he kills himself.
Jem knows nothing she can say or do will bring him back. But she wants to know who was responsible. And she wants to take them down.
A searing story of love, revenge and betrayal from a bestselling author.

A Kiss in the Dark
A Kiss in the Dark by Cat Clarke

When Alex meets Kate the attraction is instant.
Alex is funny, good-looking, and a little shy – everything that Kate wants in a boyfriend.
Alex can’t help falling for Kate, who is pretty, charming and maybe just a little naive…
But one of them is hiding a secret, and as their love blossoms, it threatens to ruin not just their relationship, but their lives.

Trouble
Trouble by Non Pratt

In this dazzling debut novel, a pregnant teen learns the meaning of friendship—from the boy who pretends to be her baby’s father.
When the entire high school finds out that Hannah Shepard is pregnant via her ex-best friend, she has a full-on meltdown in her backyard. The one witness (besides the rest of the world): Aaron Tyler, a transfer student and the only boy who doesn’t seem to want to get into Hannah’s pants. Confused and scared, Hannah needs someone to be on her side. Wishing to make up for his own past mistakes, Aaron does the unthinkable and offers to pretend to be the father of Hannah’s unborn baby. Even more unbelievable, Hannah hears herself saying “yes.”
Told in alternating perspectives between Hannah and Aaron, Trouble is the story of two teenagers helping each other to move forward in the wake of tragedy and devastating choices. As you read about their year of loss, regret, and hope, you’ll remember your first, real best friend—and how they were like a first love.

Non Pratt was absolutely hilarious on the YALC panel about sex in YA! I had wanted to read her book for the longest time, but I was so determined to after that panel.

Say Her Name
Say Her Name by James Dawson

Roberta 'Bobbie' Rowe is not the kind of person who believes in ghosts. A Halloween dare at her ridiculously spooky boarding school is no big deal, especially when her best friend Naya and cute local boy Caine agree to join in too. They are ordered to summon the legendary ghost of 'Bloody Mary': say her name five times in front of a candlelit mirror, and she shall appear... But, surprise surprise, nothing happens. Or does it?
Next morning, Bobbie finds a message on her bathroom mirror... five days... but what does it mean? And who left it there? Things get increasingly weird and more terrifying for Bobbie and Naya, until it becomes all too clear that Bloody Mary was indeed called from the afterlife that night, and she is definitely not a friendly ghost. Bobbie, Naya and Caine are now in a race against time before their five days are up and Mary comes for them, as she has come for countless others before... A truly spine-chilling yet witty horror from shortlisted 'Queen of Teen' author James Dawson.

One of the most hilarious guys ever. This guy was a genius, definitely deserves his title as the Queen of Teen! He even let me try on his crown when I met him at the signing. It was too big and actually fell all the way down to my shoulders!

The Kissing Booth
The Kissing Booth by Beth Reekles

Meet Rochelle Evans: pretty, popular - and never been kissed.
Meet Noah Flynn: badass, volatile - and a total player.
When Elle decides to run a kissing booth at the school's Spring Carnival, she locks lips with Noah and her life is turned upside down. Her head says to keep away, but her heart wants to draw closer - this romance seems far from fairy tale and headed for heartbreak... Will Elle get her happily ever after?

I am honestly not sure if I will end up enjoying this or not, but I want to give it a go. I think the hideous cover puts me off.

Follow Me Down
Follow Me Down by Tanya Byrne

When sixteen-year-old Adamma Okomma, a Nigerian diplomat's daughter, arrives at exclusive Crofton College in Wiltshire, she is immediately drawn to beautiful, tempestuous, unpredictable Scarlett Chiltern. Adamma and Scarlett become inseparable - until they fall for the same guy. Soon the battle lines are drawn and Adamma is shunned by Scarlett and her privileged peers. But then Scarlett goes missing and everything takes a darker turn. Adamma always knew that Scarlett had her secrets, but some secrets are too big to keep and this one will change all of their lives for ever.

Blackfin Sky
Blackfin Sky by Kat Ellis

When Sky falls from Blackfin Pier and drowns on her sixteenth birthday, the whole town goes into mourning – until she shows up three months later like nothing happened.
Unravelling the mystery of those missing months takes Sky to the burned-out circus in the woods, where whispers of murder and kidnapping begin to reveal the town’s secrets. But Sky’s not the only one digging up the past – the old mime from the circus knows what happened to her, and he has more than one reason for keeping quiet about it.

We Were Liars
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

We are the Liars.
We are beautiful, privileged and live a life of carefree luxury.
We are cracked and broken.
A story of love and romance.
A tale of tragedy.
Which are lies?
Which is truth?

I bought this as a gift for my sister and plan to give it to her for her birthday. But, I do kind of like the idea of having the paperback and hardback. So I might end up keeping it and ordering her one from Book Depository.

These are just the books I received from YALC for free, some for the purpose to review.

The Boy with the Porcelain Blade (Erebus Sequence, #1)

An ornate yet dark fantasy, with echoes of Mervyn Peake, Robin Hobb and Jon Courtenay Grimwood. An original and beautifully imagined world, populated by unforgettable characters.
Lucien de Fontein has grown up different. One of the mysterious and misshapen Orfano who appear around the Kingdom of Landfall, he is a talented fighter yet constantly lonely, tormented by his deformity, and well aware that he is a mere pawn in a political game. Ruled by an insane King and the venomous Majordomo, it is a world where corruption and decay are deeply rooted - but to a degree Lucien never dreams possible when he first discovers the plight of the 'insane' women kept in the haunting Sanatoria.
Told in a continuous narrative interspersed with flashbacks we see Lucien grow up under the care of his tutors. We watch him forced through rigorous Testings, and fall in love, set against his yearning to discover where he comes from, and how his fate is tied to that of every one of the deformed Orfano in the Kingdom, and of the eerie Sanatoria itself.

Solitaire
Solitaire by Alice Oseman

In case you’re wondering, this is not a love story.
My name is Tori Spring. I like to sleep and I like to blog. Last year – before all that stuff with Charlie and before I had to face the harsh realities of A-Levels and university applications and the fact that one day I really will have to start talking to people – I had friends. Things were very different, I guess, but that’s all over now.
Now there’s Solitaire. And Michael Holden.
I don’t know what Solitaire are trying to do, and I don’t care about Michael Holden.
I really don’t.
This incredible debut novel by outstanding young author Alice Oseman is perfect for fans of John Green, Rainbow Rowell and all unflinchingly honest writers.

I can't wait to get to this one, it sounds so interesting and I have seen some great reviews for it.

Clariel by Garth Nix

Clariel is the daughter of the one of the most notable families in the Old Kingdom, with blood relations to the Abhorsen and, most importantly, to the King. When her family moves to the city of Belisaere, there are rumors that her mother is next in line for the throne. However, Clariel wants no part of it—a natural hunter, all she ever thinks about is escaping the city’s confining walls and journeying back to the quiet, green world of the Great Forest.
But many forces conspire against Clariel’s dream. A dangerous Free Magic creature is loose in the city, her parents want to marry her off to a killer, and there is a plot brewing against the old and withdrawn King Orrikan. When Clariel is drawn into the efforts to find and capture the creature, she discovers hidden sorcery within herself, yet it is magic that carries great dangers. Can she rise above the temptation of power, escape the unwanted marriage, and save the King?

Was so excited to get this! I had to shout Sabriel's Army really loudly at the Hot Key Books people to get it, as part of a Twitter giveaway at YALC. I have to hunt down books 2 and 3, I can only find book 1 on my bookshelves. I am so excited to see what happens in this.

The Young World (The Young World Trilogy, #1)
The Young World by Chris Weitz

Welcome to New York, a city ruled by teens. After a mysterious Sickness wipes out the rest of the population, the young survivors assemble into tightly run tribes. Jefferson, the reluctant leader of the Washington Square tribe, and Donna, the girl he's secretly in love with, have carved out a precarious existence among the chaos. But when another tribe member discovers a clue that may hold the cure to the Sickness, five teens set out on a life-altering road trip to save humankind. The tribe exchanges gunfire with enemy gangs, escapes cults and militias, braves the wilds of the subway and Central Park ...and discovers truths they could never have imagined.

I picked up TWO of this. I couldn't remember if I grabbed one on day one, I came home with 21 books so I couldn't really remember, so I made sure to grab one on day two. Might need to do a giveaway or gift it to someone.

  4. Oooh, such a great post today, Charnell! And don't feel too guilty blogging-wise, we all need a break sometimes! :)

Also, your kitten is just the cutest!

I'm really interested to hear what you think about the Geek Girl books. I'm not sure if I want to read them or not yet.

I really want to read Trouble! So glad to hear that the author is hilarious. :)

Say Her Name is on my TBR too!

Solitaire sounds super good! I'm going to have to get myself a copy as soon as my book-buying ban is over!

As for the giveaway, I think I'd choose Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers, but I'm not sure.

  6. Your kitten is adorable! I have one too and he can definitely be distracting when I am trying to read and/or blog! Also, I'm so jealous you got Trouble by Non Pratt! I'm really excited to see your thoughts on it, and how the author handles to topic of sex in YA in a more open manner, considering the subject matter of the book.

  8. Doooon't feel guilty about blogging. Seriously! DO NOT. It makes blogging zero fun. :( And what's the point of blogging if it's not fun? Like if you just need to not read blogs answer comments for a while...don't let yourself feel bad about it. JUST BE YOU. I am glad you're blogging again, though, because your posts, omg! My favourites! XD NOT EVEN EXAGGERATING RIGHT NOW.
Also, yay for The Young World! It's probably the only one I actually recognise on this list! But I've been woefully out of the arc world for a few weeks now. I'm taking a little reading break myself. But goodness knows I apparently still have a lot to say. >.> Rambly, that's what I am. *ahem* Say Her Name looks awesome too, although it looks like it needs a Winchester to come in and sort some crap out. ;)

    1. Exactly, I am glad I am back into the swing of things now but I did feel terrible guilty for quite some time. I am so happy you enjoy my posts, you already know that I am a total stalker of yours... I ADORE THEM :)

I love your long rambly comments, they are my favourite. I will be sad when no Winchester's show up in Say Her Name, super sad.

  16. I have three things to say about this post.

1 - AMAZING. You got all of those signed, great stuff! Now I'm thinking I should've given more time to YA Lit Con! Although by the time it hit 12pm at LFCC, I was getting fed up so maybe not... (P.S., did you get TWO of Young World?? *scrolls up again* you did! Hahahaha)

2 - I had a dream the night before last night that a kitten that wouldn't stop following me, so I decided to take it in and look after it - I just finished writing up what I remembered into a modern fantasy novella I'm writing, but when I saw this post I realised, I think it's YOUR kitten! You had pictures in the Haul Day 1 post! Although the one in my dream was tortoise-shell and called Sophia.

3 - At work (I work in a bookshop) I saw the book Solitaire and I must say it looks extremely interesting. I'm not going to buy it because I've bought over 90 fantasy books within the last 30 days (LFCC partly to blame), but I can't wait for your review so leave a linky on my blog if I forget to come back! Have fun reading =] from, Ashana.

    1. 1. It was so bad that first day, the second day was a lot better so it was easier to deal with. I did pick up 2, I got a little confused with what I had picked up so I grabbed one on day 2, got home and realised I already had one. Will give one away soon :)

      2. My kitten is stalking your dreams! I have a tortoiseshell cat as well, she's a cutier.

      3. Will try to remember to do that! :)
