Films for Thoughts on Thursday: Blended

This is a weekly meme that I am hosting here at Reviews from a Bookworm. I own over 500 books, I'mn a book blogger so it's kind of obvious that I love books. But the one thing I own more of than books is DVDs, I love movies, TV shows, musicals. So I think it's time to include a weekly movie review on the blog. To take part all you have to do is share a movie review once a week, link back to Reviews from a Bookworm and add your link to the linky tool.

This weeks movie review will be for:

Blended

I need to start by saying that The Wedding Singer is probably my favourite Adam Sandler film. And I actually really loved Fifty First Dates. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore just work so well with each other and have a great on screen chemistry. They make a perfect comedic pairing in my opinion. So, I was excited they were doing a new film together but very apprehensive at the same time. Did I have high expectations? Nope. Did I expect to be disappointed? Yup. Was I proved right? Not even slightly. I ended up really loving this, but I will note that this got slated by critics. Oh well, bothered.

The movie starts with Barrymore's character, Lauren and Sandler's character, Jim on a disastrous blind date. Neither has a good time and each makes up an excuse as to why they have to leave. Both are single parents, Lauren's husband cheated and now finds anyway to get out of doing anything with his two boys whenever he can, Jim is raising three girls alone and struggling with them growing up. They end up being at the same resort in Africa on a holiday and having to share a suite together. There is a back story to that so don't worry, see the movie to find out. It's a romantic comedy so we all know where it's going. They begin to get to know one another, see how much they have in common and develop feelings for each other. And then there's a bunch of laughs thrown in for good measure.

Okay, I'll admit that I was surprised I enjoyed this as much as I did. It had me laughing consistently from beginning to end and what more can I really ask for from a romantic comedy. Was the storyline totally predictable? Of course, aren't all romantic comedies. It was so nice to see Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore working with each other once again. They don't disappoint in this and have just as much comedic chemistry as always. I have adored them together since The Wedding Singer, I love that film and it's definitely my favourite of their movies together. But I didn't feel this disappointed at all, it was a lot of fun.

The surprise of the movie was how funny the children were in this. I went with my mum and was surprised to find so many kids in the cinema with their parents. I kind of get that this is a film that focuses on family and everything but, in my opinion, it isn't exactly a family film. For me it's an adult comedy. Plus, all the comments about the girls looking like boys and having to get a makeover for guys to like them isn't something I'd want to be showing my young daughter if I had one. It kind of sends the message that it's not good to be a tomboy as a teenager, which is utter rubbish. Other than that though, I did really love all the kids parts in this movie and they provided a lot of the laughs.

The number one show stealer was definitely Terry Crews and his backup singers. He would pop up throughout the film and sing songs. He probably had me and my mum cracking up the most. He would just sing the most random songs that would link up to what was going on in the story. It just worked so well in this and I could not stop laughing. He was definitely the show stealer!

This was just a fun movie. It had enough laughs and the storyline, whilst utterly predictable, worked really well. The child actors were fantastic and had such brilliant parts in this. Sandler and Barrymore are as amazing together as always. I know this is one I will want to watch again when it comes out on DVD, it was a lot of fun. If you're looking for an easy watch that will make you laugh then I highly recommend this.

7/10 Butterflies

So the movie as a whole is pretty predictable and we can all guess how it ends. Some of the jokes were silly but I honestly didn't care. For me, this worked as a romantic comedy. I was so happy to see Sandler and Barrymore back together in a movie. I wasn't too sure about the whole message around the makeover and stuff, but oh well. I laughed consistently throughout and that was all I had wanted from this film.

Next Week

Not sure yet!
I'm hoping for How To Train Your Dragon 2!

I have been meaning to take part in both of the following memes for a while now, so its nice to finally be able to get to them. I will be taking part in Reading is Fun Again's Thoughtful Thursday and Okay, Let's Read's  Thursday Thoughts, picking between them or doing both topics each week.

Reading Conditions

Is there somewhere you always read or spend the most time reading? What time of day do you usually read or is it varied? Are you the type of person who can read with music on? Do you become easily distracted under certain conditions? If so, which conditions? What is your ideal setting and situation?

My bed! I love my bed and it's the place I read the most. That's partly because I share a flat with no living room, so I don't really have anywhere else to read there. But it's so comfy and it's a brilliant excuse to snuggle down with a blanket in my pyjamas.

I can't read with music on because I think that would distract me more. I do really like to read with the TV on at home though, just for background noise. I'm not sure why, but reading in complete silence freaks me out and I much prefer background noise.

I become distracted if I am trying to read with other people in the room. I always read at lunch when I am at work, but if someone comes in then I get distracted. Especially if they start trying to talk to me, even though it's pretty clear that I am reading a book. I only get an hour to read at lunch, less after I finish eating, so I hate getting interrupted, haha.

I usually read during lunch and at night, mostly because I am working or blogging or socialising during the other times.

Book Memories

What is your favourite book purchasing memory?

Love this question and it's so easy to answer: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. That's because it came out on my birthday. I got to go and get it at midnight and read it all the way into my birthday and I was so excited. Not only that, but my parents let me open my birthday card from my sisters before I went. So I got to open it before my actual birthday, and I was a little confused why. Until I opened it. They had got me tickets to see my favourite band live (MCR at the time), I died of excitement because I'd been bugging my parents about it but they had told me I was too young and then got them as a surprise. So I got tickets to see my favourite band & the 6th HP book in one day! AMAZING!

The midnight pick ups of HP were things I always looked forward to. It has a brilliant atmosphere and is just so much fun. That was the year the crazy guy was dressed as Harry Potter, with scar, cloak, wand and wig and was running around the store on a fake broom. He kind of tripped and fell into the shelves at one point and got shouted at. It was hilarious, definitely my favourite book buying memory. But Deathly Hallows is a close second.

  2. OHMY GOSH! I've been wanting to watch this! I think I am goign to check torrent *illegal illegal* HAHA I absolutely love Adam as an actor. I loved all his movies and I was appalled by what the critcs are saying (but they always give shit in any movie anyway). And the mention of Terry Crews appearance already got a goofy grin from me. That's going to be gold! I am glad that this movie made you cackle. :D

*have to delete the first comment because there was a mistake HAHAHA crap

    1. I really think critics are a lot harsher with comedy films than others. They are being critical of everything, but usually skip the most important part for a comedy - is it funny? I thought this was and I really enjoyed it.

  3. I read on my bed too!! I DO have a bean bag...except those darn things get flat super fast. Bed wins for comfiness (although when you find that perfect spot it's such a killer when someone randomly calls you and you have to get up. WORST OF EVER). Ahem...I love your book buying memory!! I can't really think of one. I know I was freaking out of my SKIN when I got my first arc. It was the moment of brilliance of ever. (I'm super eloquent.)

    1. I got super excited about my first ARC too, didn't even think of that. But that HP memory will probably always be top, LOVED IT!

I want a giant comfy bean bag like my sister has at her house, it's big enough to sleep on and is SUPER comfy! <3

  4. This sounds like a nice film. I actually like Adam Sandler, especially in Bedtime Stories, that's fantastic, he's a great comedy actor and works brilliantly with children, so I'm glad this was good. Reading, usually in bed too, it's so comfy and snuggly and I can move around and just, ahh, bliss! Your memory was so sweet! I don't think I have a book buying memory, nothing's ever stayed with me long enough to warrant that answer, shame really. Still, COME BACK, I MISS YOU!

  6. Sandler and Drew are an amazing duo, I love everything they have been in together but The Wedding Singer is my favorite as well. In fact, I think I have seen it so many times I have the movie memorized by now. :P

I am so glad you liked this. After reading some of the critics reviews on it I was so sad that more didn't like it.

  8. I've found Adam Sandler quite funny in what I've seen him in so far. I might check this out!

AMEN to Harry Potter. My favourite book purchasing memory is when my sister and I queued up outside Waterstones in Central London for the midnight release of HP7. The queue was so long it stretched down the road and around the block and so many people had dressed up as well. Definitely the coolest book-related thing I have ever done.

Looking forward to your How To Train Your Dragon 2 review!

    1. I would have loved to have gone into central London for that one! But I was quite young and there is no way my parents would have let me! I bet it was amazing though.

  9. Even if it was a bit predictable, I'm glad you still found it enjoyable nonetheless! It sounds like the perfect romantic comedy! :D

And YES! Purchasing Harry Potter has got to be a great memory, right? :D Sounds like you had a really unique experience doing so!

  13. I also like Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore together so I'm sure I'll like this one too. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

I cannot read in bed because I fall asleep. The sofa is my main place to read, but I'll read anywhere. If I'm just starting a book, I find that reading around other people can be distracting, but once I've been reading it and I'm into it, I can ready anywhere. ~Pam

    1. I really did, I love those two together. I do get sleepy when reading in bed sometimes, but not always. It can result in some day time naps though, but I love 'em.
